I really liked Man of Steel. It is a gritty, realistic departure from the previous colorful comedy laden Richard Donner/Christopher Reeves films. Don’t get me wrong I am a fan of the original films. However, this film features more of a science fiction theme when it explores the backstory of the Superman’s birth and the ultimate destruction of Krypton.
Henry Cavill, best known for his role as Charles Brandon on the Tudors, was perfectly casted as Superman. His Clark is a tortured soul searching for anonymity…his Kal-El is a stranger, a true alien to fellow Earthlings and his Superman was heroic, vulnerable, edgy and even handsome. He is a really good Superman.
Michael Shannon was ruthless, and completely believable as the psychopathic yet nationalistic Zod. Costner and Crowe were excellent as Clark’s biological and adopted fathers. Diane Lane was very good Martha Kent. Both death scenes were very well done, but Costner’s farewell ripped my damn heart out. However, I feel that manage to give a decent portrayal of Lois Lane despite looking nothing like what I’d picture Lois to look like.
I thought it was best to comment on the story/plot last. Since it is an origin story the majority of the audience knew what it was going to entail. However I thought David S Goyer took a fresh approach to it using different Superman graphic novels as source material.
Overall I thought this was a great reboot of the Superman franchise. I am hoping that this will lead to more sequels and ultimately to the Justice League movie that we fans have wanted for so long. Kudos to the cast and crew of Man of Steel for an enjoyable summer film.
